چکیده

This study was designed to determine Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae resistance pattern to some beta and non-beta lactam antibiotics currently in use. Fifty (50) samples (25 stool sample and 25 sputum sample) were collected and cultured using streak method of inoculation. Fifteen (15) isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae was gotten from sputum samples and 15 isolates of E.coli gotten from stool samples. Disc diffusion method was adopted for the antimicrobial assay. Out of the 15 isolates of E.coli tested, 93.3% were susceptible to ciprofloxacin, 80.0% to Gentamicin, 86.7% to Oflaxacin,73.3% to sulfamethoxazole and 80.0% to Nitrofurantoin, while all were resistant to amoxicillin. Klebsiella pneumoniae showed 80.0% susceptibility to ciprofloxacin, 73.3% to Gentamicin, 80.0% to Oflaxacin and 100.0% and 93.3% resistance to sulfamethoxazole and Nitrofurantoin respectively. For the beta-lactam antibiotics, 80.0% susceptibility to ceftazidime was recorded against Klebsiella pneumoniae. There was no significant difference (p=0.05) in activity between the beta-lactam drugs and the non-beta-lactam drugs against the isolates. Therefore, any of the drugs from these groups could be used in the treatment of infections caused by these test isolates.

The Survey of Genes Encoding Beta-Lactamases, in Escherichia Coli Resistant to Beta-Lactam and Non-Beta-Lactam Antibiotics

Objective(s) Resistance to the new generation of cephalosporins which is mediated by Extended-Spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) has been found among Escherichia coli isolates throughout the world. These resistance genes and their producers, the micro-organisms carrying beta-lactamases, are responsible for serious clinical and therapeutic problems among inpatients and it is necessary to pay more...

ترکیب آنتی‌بیوتیک‌های بتالاکتام و مهارکننده بتالاکتاماز علیه سویه‌های انتروباکتریاسه تولیدکننده بتالاکتاماز با طیف وسیع

In the last decades, Extended-Spectrum-β-Lactamases (ESBLs) in gram negative bacilli have appeared as a significant mechanism of resistance to antibiotics. Although resistance to carbapenems is increasing among bacteria, they are still the treatment of choice for serious infections caused by ESBL producers. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of ß-lacta...

بررسی مقاومت آنتی بیوتیکی و شیوع ژن های بتالاکتامازی کلبسیلا پنومونیه در بیمارستان های آموزشی دانشگاه علوم پزشکی مازندران 1393

Background and purpose: : Klebsiella pneumoniae has emerged as a significant opportunistic pathogen responsible for nosocomial infections. This bacteria is frequently resistant to multiple classes of antibiotics such as family of beta-lactam antibiotics. β-lactamases enzyme represent the main mechanism of bacterial resistance to β-lactam antibiotics. This study was conducted to determi...

Identification and characterization of a new porin gene of Klebsiella pneumoniae: its role in beta-lactam antibiotic resistance.

Klebsiella pneumoniae porin genes were analyzed to detect mutations accounting for the porin deficiency observed in many beta-lactam-resistant strains. PCR and Southern blot analysis revealed the existence of a third porin gene in addition to the OmpK36 and OmpK35 porin genes previously described. This new porin gene was designated ompK37 and is present in all of the clinical isolates tested. T...

Antimicrobial Behavior of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles and β-Lactam Antibiotics against Pathogenic Bacteria

Background: Multi-drug resistance among the pathogenic bacteria poses a serious threat to public health. Nanoparticles are one of the most effective therapeutic agents. Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) are well known antimicrobial agents and are regarded as nontoxic and bio-safe. The present study aims to investigate the antimicrobial effect of ZnO NPs against the bacterial strains i.e. Klebs...
